HOW TO - Podcasting with Tumblr

If you didn’t already know, I record a podcast called From The Pub with my friend and fellow potty-mouth Darren Scott. I’ll go out on a limb here and say it is very funny, well produced and I think you should listen to it. Right, self promotion bit over- onto why you are here.

I receive quite a few emails asking how I use Tumblr to publish the podcast. I’m not the first person to use Tumblr in this way but I’ve not found another guide online explaining how to do it, so to rectify this obvious omission in world knowledge, here is an easy guide on how to set up a podcast with Tumblr.

Step One

Upload your .mp3 file to a web hosting account of your choice. Dropbox offers 2GB of online storage for free, or for the more technically experienced try Amazon S3.

Step Two

Sign up for a Tumblr account if you haven’t already. If you treat every new post as a new episode, simply make a new Text post, (not an Audio post as you might expect), and include a standard hyperlink to the .mp3 file.

Step Three

Sign up to Google Feedburner. If you have a Google account, you have a Feedburner account already. Take the RSS feed of your Tumblr site, http://your_tumblr_site.tumblr.com/rss and head on over to Feedburner. When you type your feed address into the ‘new feed’ box, make sure you tick the ‘I am a podcaster!’ box. Work your way through the Feedburner process and fill in the required information.

Step Four

If you want to get your podcast on iTunes, you can now take the URL Feedburner has given you, and submit it to iTunes to be listed in the podcast directory.

Step Five

Record more podcasts! Each time you have a new episode, simply make a new text post in Tumblr and within the text include a direct link to the .mp3 file of that episode.
